Think Twice. Act Once
And all my favs for an easy colonoscopy. Take it from someone who has one annually:)
I just got back from attending a funeral for a family member who is still alive. It was a very special and beautiful ceremony for my uncle, who was honored with a celebration of life before his impending death. While it was incredibly sad and painful to say goodbye like that, I was so grateful for the opportunity to do it.
I went a few days before the funeral, and I got to spend some time with my cousin and my uncle. My cousin asked my uncle, "What is a motto you live by?" He said he had two: "Do unto others as you expect others to do unto you" and "Think Twice. Act Once." Do unto others is a favorite of mine. In fact I am often reading my son the book called “Do unto Ottters!” Highly recommend.
"Think Twice. Act Once." Apparently, this comes from a carpentry rule: "Measure Twice. Cut Once." But I love the sentiment, especially because my uncle said this almost directly to my mother and me. We are two of the greatest overthinkers. Overthinking, overworking, and overanalyzing are not overly productive. I love this quote from Derek Lowe:
"I recall being impressed at one point in my career by a guy down the hall from me, who was working like a man possessed. Every time I went past his lab, he was in there cranking away, looking like a multi-armed Hindu deity with each hand holding an Erlenmeyer flask. Closer inspection revealed the truth. It turned out that he was working like this because he was doing almost everything in the longest, most wasteful way possible. No wonder it looked like so much effort. Cutting your lawn with a bread knife is a lot of work, too, and will fill your day up like nothing you've ever seen."
Well, I am attempting to live by this motto, at least in the last day or two since I returned from this celebration of life. I am doing a lot of living right now, but I am not trying to do a lot of overthinking. "Que Sera, Sera" is the absolute last thing anyone would equate with my brain, but as things pop up, I find myself humming that tune. Whatever will be, will be.
On the horizon in the next week and a half are the last day of 2nd grade for my son, my annual colonoscopy, and a move with a lot of unknowns. Plus, a full time job running my own business. Que Sera, Sera.
By the way, every time I tell people that I am doing a colonoscopy, I hear the same thing: "Ugh, I am sorry, that's no fun. I am due for one." Has Katie Couric taught you nothing? Colonoscopies are really not hard at all, but it is all about how you prep. Here are my top 5 tips to help you get thru it without overthinking it!
1.Begin the Week Before! Don’t go having a cheeseburger the day before your prep day just because you fear you will be hungry for 24 hours. That is not going to help you prep. You really need to slow down your intake. I go for more soups and salads in the week leading up. No heavy meals. Lots of fiber.
One of the things I love to do the week before the colonoscopy is Elissa Goodman’s soup cleanse. It is a great way to feel great before going into the dreaded prep day!
The procedure itself is so easy. You sleep so well. No dreams.
2. Bring your own stuff Hospitals and endoscopy centers alike have horrible food. For me, the last thing I want to do is put junk in my gut after just cleaning it all out! I bring my own snacks. Yup. This year I think I am bringing a little Yeti. You are hungry after, but you want to stay light. Usually, I bring a homemade paleo muffin or almond flour crackers. I might just make myself a little pacha toasted bread with vegan butter and bring that. I think that will be just what I need.
3. Colonoscopy Fashion: LOL. Nothing. No jewelry. Just cozy clothes that you can get on and get off. Yes, folks. I am not overthinking this one, but I am giving you my colonoscopy recommendations down to the outfit:
Tank: LOVE this one from Mate the Label. Built in bra - easy on and off.
Sweats: My favorite are the monrow super soft joggers. Again easy on and off
Bring a hoodie or Jacket. I love my Mate the Label Chore jacket or the DOEN X GAP Jean Jacket.
Easy slide on Birks and cozy socks (although they give you grippy socks too) IYKYK.
I am no doctor, so always check with them on the important stuff, but don’t sleep on the colonoscopy chic. Stay healthy, but make it fashion.
And don’t forget to laugh.
